Have you got a photo of the damage that you can share? Different situations call for different approaches and materials, so I can't really be 100% sure with my advice without seeing it.
How large is the area you need to fill? Is there any kind of backing behind it?
If the damage is small or there is something behind the board that the filler will be supported by, then a general-purpose filler like this UNi-PRO Multi Purpose Interior Filler would be fine.
If the damage is a bit larger, I'd need to see it to confidently offer advice.
