This kitchen feels bigger and brighter after painting the cabinets and tiled splashback, adding more cabinetry with trim and installing a new benchtop and appliances.

The project

We've been working on our kitchen over the last six months. We managed to paint the cabinets and tiled splashback, add more cabinetry and install new appliances and benchtop.

When we finished painting the cabinets, they seemed a bit flat so we added strips of hardwood moulding as trim. I used nails and some glue to attach the trims onto the cabinet doors. I then filled any gaps at the joints and sides with wood filler and sanded everything down before painting, including the nail heads. It's a great way to make the cabinets pop, but definitely took a bit of effort.

We also decided to change the handles from black to brushed gold. This kitchen makeover has truly made cooking such a delight and the space feels much bigger and brighter.

Using a few cans of White Knight Tile and Laminate paint, Workshop member Nikki painted timber-look laminate cabinets, utility panels and subway tiles to transform her kitchen.

By removing the cabinetry doors and drawers and painting them a clean white, Workshop member Pete was able to stay on budget for this $10,000 kitchen makeover.

Let me tag @diy_hausdesigns to make sure they are aware of your question. From a renovating point of view, if the sink is still in good condition, I would definitely re-use it. It's possible to repolish your stainless-steel sink with very fine steel wool in combination with a stainless-steel polisher.

Do the painted doors mark or scratch easily ?  As I am thinking of painting our rented units cupboards but was afraid they might scratch easily

Thanks for sharing your question about your kitchen makeover. One of the reasons for the kitchen paint to chip or fail is because of poor preparation. If the surface of your kitchen doors are properly prepared the kitchen paint will have a sound base to attach to. Kitchen paint such as the Dulux renovation range has been designed to go onto laminated surfaces and are quite robust and can put up the with day-to-day kitchen use. With a fair bit of care, the painted surfaces should last a long while.
