Making a Splash

Using vintage tins and fragrant herbs, this vertical garden project is a quick and easy way to add character to a fence or outdoor area.

The project

I got these rusted grape tins from a vintage shop and put together a vertical garden full of herbs using hessian bags, weed mat, potting mix, herbs and tags. It was really quick and simple.

I've never had a garden of my own so I had no idea what I was doing, but a team member at Bunnings helped me out.

I used the hessian bags folded in half purely for aesthetic reasons. I was told hessian rots easily, so to try and reduce the chance of rotting and to keep the potting mix in place, I then used a layer of weed matting.

That was all the hard work done. I filled each tin up, planted the herbs and added copper tags to each basket, attaching them to the fence with old nails to keep the rustic feel.

We are pretty happy with it and are looking forward to cooking with all our yummy herbs – thyme, basil, mint, parsley, sage and oregano.

If I could change anything from this project it would be the weed matting. It was hard to cut and frayed badly.

Workshop member helpfully OsmayG suggested in the discussion to use peat moss or bark instead so that the herbs can still drain without the hessian rotting or weed mat fraying.

How to build a vertical garden

A vertical garden can provide greenery and colour to enliven a drab location and provide plenty of growing space in even very small areas. Create your own by following this step-by-step guide: How to build a vertical garden.

Workshop member kel built three vertical gardens along her fence so she just has to turn on a tap and the whole garden is watered by a rainwater tank.
