Spray painting tapware can be a quick and affordable way to give your bathroom a fresh look.

The project

I spray painted the tap and mixer in my bathroom and was pretty impressed with how it turned out. After looking at prices to buy a brand new one, I thought I would try out the Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Spray Paint Satin Black first since it would save me a lot of money and it would be such a quick D.I.Y. project.

How to spray paint tapware

Here's how I turned my tapware from chrome to black.

Step 1

Clean the tapware well.

Step 2

Sand with 240 grit sandpaper.

Step 3

Clean again to make sure the area is ready for paint.

Step 4

Tape around the tapware to make sure spray paint doesn't go everywhere.

Step 5

Spray following the instructions on the bottle (I applied two coats).

@rubytuesday1953  Fantastic job @lifestylebymari. We also have the same problem. The black tap ware is sooooo expensive. This seems like a great alternative. We're doing up our laundry and we want to update the taps to black. How's the wear factor?

Wow, that's awesome. Would the same work for aluminium / chrome finish door handles for kitchen cabinets?

Hi @ongbianca88,

I'm sure @lifestylebymari will correct me if I'm wrong, but from their description "I thought I would try out the Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Spray Paint Satin Black", it appears to be Dulux 300g Metalshield Epoxy Enamel Spray Paint Satin Black that they used.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

I wonder if this would work around a chrome border of a mirror so the mirror matched the taps?

Very possibly @Simone1976. Chrome plating is exceptionally smooth and primers or paints don't bond well with it's surface. By scratching up the surface you are keying it which allows it to take paint closer to what a standard metal would. You are creating microgrooves which fill with paint and allow it to bite into the surface.

We'd be keen to see your results.
