Succulent frames are an easy D.I.Y. project and a great way to spruce up a bare wall.

The project

I made succulent frames to hang on our courtyard wall. After three years, they started to look a bit tired, so I remade them with some improvements.

I used treated Pine nailed together with 45 degree mitres to form an open box. I made the bottom of the box using corflute sheeting. My original design used marine ply, which didn't hold up to the constant moisture. I previously used a succulent potting mix, but found it kept falling out of the frame.

This time I decided to first line the box with garden plastic, and I used sphagnum moss instead of soil.

The frames hang on the wall via French cleats.

Once the succulents took root, I hid the exposed plastic and chicken wire edges with a timber trim.
