I have got patches in my lawn and all sorts of weed growing. Not an expert in this area and would like some recommendations on what can I do to get this looking good before summer. Also can someone please tell me what type of grass it is.
Hi @alimuhammed1,
It looks like either Kikuyu or Couch, and I am leaning more towards Couch, but it would be very tough to say with certainty based on these photos alone. Could you please take some close-up photos showing the leaves? If you could tear some out and take a photo against the concrete, that would also help.
Have a look at Common Lawn Types And How to Identify Them for some information you could use. Look out for things like above-ground runners, as they can also help identify your lawn.
Regardless of your lawn type, at the beginning of Spring, it is worthwhile to dethatch and aerate your lawn. Dethatching and aerating your lawn at the beginning of spring is beneficial because it clears away the layer of dead grass and organic matter that blocks water, nutrients, and air from reaching the roots, while also loosening compacted soil from winter. This creates a healthier growing environment, encourages stronger root development, and allows new grass shoots to establish more quickly, resulting in a thicker, greener lawn throughout the season. Have a read through How To Dethatch Your Lawn and How To Aerate Your Lawn for some guidance.
Once you've dethatched and aerated, I'd suggest applying a combination weed killer and fertiliser product. When selecting products to use on lawns, the main lawn type you need to be careful with is Buffalo, which I am confident your lawn is not. In your situation, you can use this Yates 4L Weed 'n' Feed Hose On Lawn Weed Killer. Ensure you cover all areas of the lawn and refrain from mowing for at least 7 days after application.
After that 7-day rest period, I would suggest mowing your lawn once every 7 days at a consistent height. Consistency in terms of mowing will train your lawn to put its energy into growing sideways. This sideways growth will fill in the space created by dethatching, thus making your lawn thicker and more brilliant to look at.
With these steps, plus a little patience, you’ll be surprised how quickly your lawn bounces back. Keep the photos coming if you’d like more help with identification!
