The Bunnings Workshop community can help with your home improvement projects.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, @keisha. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a garden.
If you’d like to create a little garden like the one in the photo, start by planning out the space and sketching the shape you want. You can use a garden hose or string on the ground to help you visualise the layout. Once you’ve chosen the spot, clear away any grass or weeds and level the soil so you have a good base to work with. Next, define the edges of your bed. In the example, river pebbles are used, but you could also use pavers or edging, depending on the look you prefer. Before planting, mix some compost into the soil to give your plants the best start.
When selecting plants, aim for a mix of structure and colour. For a Perth-friendly version, you could try Liriope for grassy clumps, Cordyline for height and bold foliage, and dwarf kangaroo paw or Scaevola for splashes of long-lasting colour. Adding groundcover Grevillea or native violets will help fill in gaps and soften the look. Position taller plants at the back or centre, with smaller flowering plants toward the front, ideally in groups of three for a natural, cohesive appearance.
Once everything is planted, spread a layer of dark mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and make the plant colours stand out. You can also add sections of decorative stones or river pebbles for contrast, just like in the example. Finally, water your plants thoroughly and keep up with occasional maintenance like topping up mulch, pruning to encourage new growth, and repositioning edging if needed. Keeping the design simple with just a few plant types repeated through the bed will give a neat, modern look while being low-maintenance and well-suited to Perth’s climate.
