hello team,
Im renting a shop and have ripped up the old sheet vinyl with plans to epoxy. Unfortunately there is so much old glue stains and grease on the concrete plus a layer of concrete leveller that I would have to remove with a diamond industrial grinder which I don’t have access to or time for as I’m starting trade next week. I’m now considering just using concrete paint. What would be the best most durable way to go about? It’s for a hairdressing salon. Hope you can help ! Thanks Jasmine ::))
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @jasmine86. It's tremendous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about coating concrete.
Thanks for sharing the details and photos. I can understand why you’re looking for a quicker solution, but unfortunately, you’re likely to run into a similar issue if you go straight to concrete paint. Concrete paint is designed to adhere to bare, clean concrete, so any remaining glue residue or grease on the floor will prevent it from sticking properly. You’d need to scrape off and remove all old glue, and prepare the concrete to ensure the paint bonds correctly.
Another point to keep in mind is that if the glue has any thickness, it will show through the paint, leaving an uneven surface that’s hard to smooth out. For a rental shop where time is limited, a more practical option might be temporary vinyl flooring or hybrid vinyl planks laid over the existing surface. Hybrid vinyl planks are durable, relatively quick to install, and if you have a couple of extra hands to help, you could get the floor done in a reasonable timeframe without the need for heavy grinding or prep.
This approach will give you a clean, safe, and professional-looking floor that works well for a hairdressing salon, while avoiding the problems that come with painting over old adhesives.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
