This budget laundry makeover included upcycling a buffet for use as a bench and extra storage.
The project
I finished this laundry makeover with inspiration from Chaks_DIY's shelf design in this laundry makeover. I debated using Kaboodle cupboards, but ended up using Flatpax ones and replaced with hinges with soft-close hinges.
My daughter's builder friend was able to help me with the VJ paneling and putting the cupboards up. It took him a few hours where it would've taken me days.
I upcycled a sideboard to use as a bench and extra storage in the laundry.
The outside looked pretty good so I was only going to paint the inside to get rid of the old wood smell but I found that the previous owners had used chalk paint and it started to rub off. I sanded the whole lot back to bare wood and started all over again.
I used Taubmans Tradex Ultra Prep Undercoat on the bare wood. I used British paints H2O Water-Based Enamel for the unit and applied four coats of Bondall Monocel Oil-Based Satin Clear Timber Varnish for the top.
I put contact inside the cupboard. No one else knows it's there except for me but I put it in all my projects.
I installed wheels on it to make it easier to move around. I used eight wheels that can take a load of up to 25kg.
All up this laundry makeover cost less than $1000 thanks to our builder friend who helped with the installation and didn't charge anything for his time.
