New pavers on a sand base were an affordable and simple way to spruce up a small patio.

The project

We wanted to retile an outdoor space partially covered in river pebbles. We wanted to use sand as this is better for drainage and easier on our feet. We also had a limited budget, so we didn't want to go down the concrete route.

Half the existing area was a concrete slab under the concrete tiles.

The other half was soil.

My partner and I cleared up this area. Then we put in boundaries and weed mats.

We then put a layer of base course and tampered it down. At this stage, we levelled it out with a minimum two percent gradient, so any water build-up runs off away from the house, given the patio is surrounded by three walls.

Then we lined the area with SureTex Geotextile. Then we added a layer of paving sand and tampered it down before laying the tiles
