Does painting over kitchen cabinets smell?

Does painting over kitchen cabinets smell?

We created this weird space in our tiny kitchen because we needed to create more storage when we put in a dishwasher.

The material is the same as the kitchen cupboards. I know I need to sand, prime and paint with special kitchen Reno paint I’m also hoping to hide the silver brackets my partner put in .

I’m just wondering if the paint smells strongly and how long for?

Just thinking about the kids and using the kitchen.

After painting I’ll put some shelves in.

Thanks

Re: Does painting over kitchen cabinets smell?

Hello @Vinnierose1

All excellent questions about kitchen paint. Which brand are you using to paint your cabinets? If you look behind the container of the paint it will indicate if it has low VOC - Volatile Organic Compounds. This is what produces the off gassing of the paint as it dries off.

If the paint does not mention that it has low VOC, odds are it will smell inside the cabinet. Technically you could mitigate the smell by airing out the cabinet with an electric fan. But it will be difficult to tell when all of the smell will go away.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Eric
