Hi I have a vintage chest with secret compartments and storage areas inside it. I want to sand it all back and replace the hinges as they have broken in half and are rusted. I have tried to get the screws out but it’s not working. I have scraped the paint away from in the groove of the screw. The drill doesn’t move them and have just tried with a screwdriver but I am worried the grove is going to be damaged so I won’t be able to move it at all. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.

Re: How to remove old hinges?

Hello @CPA41

Thanks for sharing your question about about removing old hinges from your secret chest.

If it is old brass or copper screws in the hinges, I suggest using Sutton Tools 10 Piece Screw Extractor Set. The drill bits in the set will easily go through the screw heads allowing you to use the extractors with little resistance.

Here is a link to our best advice: How do you remove damaged screws?
