Timber coat hook

I made this timber coat hook for a bedroom that I am currently updating. I used Tasmanian Oak for the backing board and I used 30mm diameter rolling pins, that I purchased from a store that was closing down, I think it's made from bamboo. 

Materials

• Tasmanian oak, 90mm x 19mm x 940 mm long.
• 30mm rolling pins (material, could be bamboo?)
• Wood glue
• Wall mates for mounting to wall.
• Countersunk screws to suit. 40mm x 8 guage
• Screw with head cut off for installing to back of hooks
• Satin clear varnish, water based

Tools

• Mitre saw
• 125mm dia sandpaper 120, 240 grit
• 125mm sander.
• Small paintbrush
• Drill to suit screws for each hook.
• Clamps.

Steps

Step 1

The hooks were cut to suit the size required using a mitre saw, set at 130 degree angle inclusive, I set the saw at 65 degree.

Step 2

Drill one end of the hook to attach a screw, I cut the head off to make it a double sided screw. 

Then glued the 65 degree cuts together.

Step 3

I cut the Tas Oak to length and divided the position of the hooks evenly, for 4 hooks, I drilled the holes for the hooks to to be installed, I also counter sink drilled holes just above the centre to allow for hidden installation to the wall using wall mates.

Sanded and painted 2 coats of varnish.

Step 4

The hooks locked up to the correct position when installed to the backing board, except for one, I had to trim the length using the mitre saw bit by bit until it locked in the correct position.

Step 5

I then removed and marked each hook position, and installed the backing board to the wall, I had to use wallmates, I couldn't locate any timber studs for mounting it.

Step 6

I re fitted the hooks. This is the installed and tested coat hook. All done,,,,,next job.....

What a clever timber coat hook. I was wondering if you drilled holes for the dowels, but using screws with their heads cut off is a clever way of doing it. That angled hook attachment is just impressive. Did you put a screw in between the dowels or is that just all glue? Thanks for showing that jig you made for attaching the dowels together. I'm definitely saving this project to my bookmarks.

Hi @EricL Thank you, I have just added more photo's, showing that I only glued the pieces together, no screws used, I found this glue, Titebond 1 to be very strong.

Thats a nice way to make a hook! Love the wieghts you used to keep the shape while gluing Looks like they worked a treat. I am confused how you have attache dit to the wall without any holes showing tho? I went through the pics a few times lol annd could only find a reference to countersinking the holes but wasnt sure if that was for the "hooks" or the holes are under the hooks? I am sure I am missing something obvious.
