How to build a ramp for the front entrance?

Hi, my husband had a stroke and now he is in a wheelchair, what material can I use to build a ramp from the beginning of the front lawn all the way into our home. Thank you Frances.

Re: ramp for the front entrance

I'm very sorry to read about your husband @Frances1

I do hope life improves for you both.

Are there services available to assist with this ramp? DVA for example?

Re: ramp for the front entrance

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Frances1. It's lovely to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about constructing a ramp.

I echo @Noyade's sentiments and wanted to let you know that the community is here to assist with guidance for your project. As mentioned, contacting your local council and asking what services they could assist with would be worthwhile. Often, they'll be able to put you in contact with someone who can perform suitable home modifications to allow ease of access. Hopefully, they should not only have details of ramp installers in your area, but they can also assist with items like grab rails. It's important to reach out and connect with services in these times, as having these resources close at hand and taking advantage of them is essential.

Timber can be used to create a temporary ramp, but generally, installing a concrete ramp with steel handrails would be a more long-term solution. Due to the need to achieve a suitable gradient for wheelchair access, this might need to be quite a long ramp. Once you've contacted your local council, let us know the result, and if you need help designing a ramp, we can certainly do that for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
