How to fix peeling paint on window sill?

Some years back (possibly 10-15) I stripped to bare timber and painted window timber surrounds using Taubmans Living Proof Gloss Acrylic.  Over the years the paint on the sills facing East have become as shown in the photo below.

I think looking at the image I have 2 possible issues

  • Poor surface prep
  • Failure to choose a more sun-resistant paint e.g. Taubmans Sun Proof

Any ideas anyone.

Re: Window Sills in direct sun

Hi @Ask_Itee,

If the window sill gets direct sunlight throughout the day, then 10-15 years of life is relatively good. We don't stock Taubmans Living Proof Gloss Acrylic now, but I believe that was an acrylic wall paint. You might like to look towards paints that are designed for window sills and doors, like our range of enamel paints. These are harder-wearing and more likely to stand up to the harshness of continual sunlight exposure. They come in water-based and oil-based versions.

I'd suggest you scrape the loose paint off, lightly sand the sill, apply a primer and then your enamel topcoat.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
