How to seal coasters?

I have painted a design on drink coasters with acrylic paint. I want to be able to use them for hot cups and possibly plates from the oven. Would Rust-oleum ultra cover gloss clear spray be suitable? If not could you suggest a suitable alternative. Many thanks for any help.

Rust-Oleum 298g 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Clear Spray Paint is an excellent choice for coating your coasters as it's commonly used for this purpose. Regarding placing hot items on it, the coating is good for up to 93 degrees celsius, so that will cover your hot cups and should be fine for your plates from the oven. If you heat your plates up past the max temperature range by accident, I suggest you use a heat-resistant silicone mat in-between the plates and the coaster, just to be safe.

Hello Michael. Many thanks for your help. It has been a while to get back to you as I had to leave the coaster for a few weeks to make sure it was completely dry before spraying. The photo doesn’t do it justice but spraying the coaster really makes the colours pop.

I would be quite confident that it would also work. However, it's always best to do a test section to determine suitability. If you are making these coasters, I'd recommend creating one to serve for the test without putting much effort into it. Trial the spray and check the durability of it and see if there are any issues. As mentioned, I'm fairly sure it will work fine, but I'd hate to ruin an artwork or something you put great effort into.

What would you recommend for ceramic coasters if I used multi surface paint ? Would this same clear spray work out ?

If the coaster is entirely painted and no high-gloss glaze is showing, then the Rust-Oleum 298g 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Clear Spray Paint would certainly work. If there were any gloss glaze exposed, I would have concerns about how easily the coating might scratch off.

Wow thank you for the quick reply! I’m eager to learn more, so I’m new to this. Gloss gaze meaning? & if I were to get acrylic pant would it put out a gloss glaze? 😃

People often make coasters from tiles @manskersmaking, which typically have a glazed coating applied through firing in a kiln. This super slick surface does not readily accept paint or coatings well, as it's non-porous. Your ceramic coasters might not have had this coating applied as you'd find on a standard bathroom tile. If you place a drop of water on the unpainted ceramic tile, does it absorb in at all or sit on the surface with no absorption? If the droplet doesn't absorb, the tile is likely coated. Feel free to post a picture of them, and I can take a look. Let me know if you need a hand uploading images.

Depending on what sheen level (glossiness) you'd like on your finished coaster, you can get the clear topcoat in both a gloss and satin (less glossy) finishes.

Would this also work on photo coasters? I have ceramic tiles that I stick photos onto. I currently use resin, but would like an easier to deal with coating that will be heat proof. Thank you.

As Mitchell has mentioned it will depend on the tile that you are using. If it has a high gloss finish on it, the clear gloss paint might scratch off the surface. A porous unfinished tile will absorb the paint and provide you with a good seal. Another factor to consider is if the picture covers too much of the tile, the sealer will end up covering the photo paper and none of tile.

Hi Mitchell. I’m so glad I bumped into this thread. Wanted to ask if Rust oleum 2x will hold against water condensation on the coasters too?
And how many coats do i need to apply and how long do i leave it to cure.

Rust-Oleum 2X will hold up against water condensation, but it's always a good idea to wipe off any moisture as soon as possible to avoid water marks or potential damage over time. Condensation left on the surface for too long could leave a slight ring or discolouration, so it’s best to address it promptly.

For the number of coats, two coats should be sufficient for solid coverage, though if you want extra protection, you can apply a third coat. Make sure each coat is fully dry before applying the next.

As for curing time, I recommend allowing the coasters to cure for at least a week before placing anything hot on them, just to ensure the finish has fully hardened and is as durable as possible.
