This custom-built workbench provides a home for a 6040 CNC (computer numerical control) router, as well as a shelf for the controller and drawers for storage.

The project
While I was on annual leave I actually got a chance to use my workshop for more than just storage, so I started to organise it.
The first project was to build a table for my 6040 CNC router that I can wheel around – it had been sitting on a fixed table.
After building the new table I added some drawers to store all the relevant bits and pieces for the CNC.
I wanted to build it a bit longer at 1200mm wide, but was limited to the lengths of 35mm x 70mm timber available, so it's 60mm shorter than on the plans I've posted below.

Bunnings timber ready to go.

Timber cut to length.

Second frame.

Legs.

Casters added.

MDF top on.

Testing the 6040 CNC in its new home.

Drawer frame.

After a bit of knocking, it's in.

Mounting drawer slides.

Installing the drawers into the slides.

Drawers installed.

Controller in its new home.

Test fit of drawer faces.

Rear storage shelf.

The final product.
Here are the plans I drew up in Fusion 360 CAD software. They don't include the drawers as these were done in situ after the build.
Tips for building a workbench
Some notes:
- I used pocket holes for all frame and drawer joints with the exception of the legs
- All the frame timbers were the short offcuts available from Bunnings
- You can adjust leg heights to suit
- For drawer boxes and frame I used 15mm ply
- The drawer bottoms are 6mm ply.

I used CutList Optimizer for my drawer sheet cuts, which is free for up to 10 optimisations per day.
