How to paint vinyl wrap kitchen cabinet?

Hello All

My kitchen is not very old, cabinet and structure is in good condition but cabinets door and drawer is with vinyl wrap on to of MDF and Vinyl Wrap is coming off few places and sometimes it is hard to open the drawers .

I think we need to remove all the wrap before painting.

do I need undercoat on MDF ?

Any idea how to remove vinyl wrap from MDF ?

I got some quote for 2 Pac Resurfacing but it is bit expensive . I saw some information here about Dulux paint but never use them. Is it paint good for MDF ?

Can I please have some advice how to paint MDF and laminate ( as side panels are laminate) ? what products and accessories to use ?

The grade of sand-paper you'll need for the MDF will depend on what residue is left on them after removing the vinyl @mmd22. If it comes off well, you might not need to sand at all. I would have thought 400-grit is far too fine for MDF. I'd suggest something along the lines of 240-grit.

I have the most experience and have heard the most feedback on the Dulux Renovation range so that would be my recommendation. If you use the correct MDF primer, you can use the Renovation range over it. For the laminate, you'll need to use the laminate primer.

If your kitchen is not very old, then there is a good chance that your cabinetry is still under warranty. Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if it can be replaced?

If you are looking to solve the issue of the vinyl wrap peeling off, then you'd need to remove it before painting. If the vinyl doesn't easily peel off, you might need to heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun. You must be careful with the heat gun not to melt the vinyl.

Once the vinyl is removed, you'll need to sand the surface to remove traces of glue and then prime the surfaces. You can use water-based oil paint like Aquanamel to paint your cabinets. Thank you for your advice .

I moved in this property only last April and I do not have any warranty information . It has been hard to find information from previous owner through real estate agent , so I think I need find other option.

What size sand paper should I use for MDF ? everyone is mentioned size 400 .

Most of the information I found on Delux Renevation Range and White knight . There is lots of information and I am getting little unsure which one to decide ?

Vinyl is coming off very easy so far .I peeled few of them by hand and MDF looking good .

I am on the way to Bunnings to get some sand paper and select the colour .

Could I please ask if I select Dulux Renovation Rang , does it come Varity of colour range or Bunnings Paint shop will have to make it for me if I want different colour ?

The Paint Shop team will happily mix the Renovation Range into your desired colour, as off the shelf, it comes just in plain white and a few select colours.

when I went to Bunnings , I met a Dulux Representative . She in informed me that I can not use Dulux Renovation Rang for MDF , I need to use Aquaname for paint . Bunnings Representation advise me the same . Will I have same good result with Aquaname and Dulux Renovation Range ?

They advise me for laminate i can use Dulux Renovation range not for MDF .

That's not entirely correct. I believe you can use the 1Step primer. However, the following is straight from the Renovation range datasheet:

TIMBER AND MDF DOORS 1st coat: Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker When completely dry, lightly sand to remove any raised fibres. 2nd coat: Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker* When completely dry, lightly sand to remove any raised fibres if present. 3rd coat: Dulux® Renovation Range Cabinet Doors in your chosen colour 4th coat: Dulux® Renovation Range Cabinet Doors in your chosen colour.

So, to follow those instructions to the tee, use can use Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker as your primer over the MDF and then topcoat with the Renovation range for cabinet doors. Alternatively, as I mentioned earlier, you can use Aquanamel, but I feel the Renovation range will give you a more durable finish.

The Dulux representative told me to use Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker then Aquaname for MDF doors .But I just realised that Aquaname only comes semi gloss or gloss , they do not have Satin option .

I have few side panel melamine and edges ( please see photos).

I am thinking If I use same top coat products for MDF , Malamine and edges it would be easy for me as it would colour and same finish > I did not have plan before to paint Melamine . It is Satin .If I use Aquaname it would be sami gloss as colour would be different .

So thinking for top coat same colour and same finish .

I know as you mentioned for MDF I need prime with Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker and for Melamine laminate Primer .

DO I need use anything in the primer for Edges / stripes ??

Any laminate or edges strips (which are also laminate) must be primed with laminate primer @mmd22.

I've confirmed that the Renovation Range can be used over MDF. You'll need to apply Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker to all the MDF doors following the instructions I provided above. The laminate panels and edging needs the Dulux Renovation Range Primer. You'll then be able to paint the whole lot with Dulux Renovation Range Cabinet Doors.

Do I need to mix anything with Dulux Renovation Range Primer as I have edgings ?

I already brought 4mm microfiber roller . Do i need any specific size Paint brush for tight corner or cut the sides ?

I am hoping to start end of the weekend and I will upload photos when I am done .

For the tight corners, I suggest using a Pro Renovator 25mm Wall Paint Brush. It's easy to clean and provides a smooth finish. To prevent paint overlap on items you don't want accidentally painted, I suggest using Frog Tape 24mm x 55m Multi Surface Masking Tape. This will provide you with a border around the items you want to protect from paint.

It sounds like an interesting project. Any updates you can provide while working on the cabinetry would be very much appreciated.

The Dulux 1L Renovation Range Clear Coat is used on tiles and benchtops for extra protection from everyday wear and tear. It's not necessary to put on a clear coat for the Renovation Range for cabinet doors.

Generally, a single coat is all that's needed to prime the door for painting. The Dulux 1L PRECISION Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker is formulated to stop stains migrating through to the top coat. The only reason you'll have to put on a second coat is if you have very stubborn stains that keep rising to the top.

Do yiu think 1 coat is enough ?

I have removed all the vinyl wrap from MDF .I was sanding with 240 but I can see lots of glue on the sand paper on which you cannot see normally .

what number sand paper should I use ? Or is there any other way I could remove glue from mdf quickly ?

I am trying to scrape off glue but it not going to be easy .

as you know , I am going to use Dulux precision stain smoke and odour blocker as primer .

Thank you for posting your kitchen cabinet doors. this is such a good example of the possibility of removing the vinyl wrap on your door and painting the timber panel underneath. To remove the glue faster you could use a Ryobi 300W Random Orbital Sander. This comes with a packet of sanding pads for you to use. It should remove the glue fairly quickly.

Now that I've seen your doors, I believe one coat is enough. However, it will not harm the doors if you wish to put a second coat on. Please make sure to give the primer enough time to cure before putting on the second coat.

I apologise for the confusion. One coat of the Dulux precision stain smoke and odour blocker as the primer will not be enough. Above I provided very specific instructions, and it's essential that you follow them precisely.

MDF DOORS:

1st coat - Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker. When completely dry, lightly sand to remove any raised fibres.

2nd coat - Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker. When completely dry, lightly sand to remove any raised fibres if present.

3rd coat - Dulux® Renovation Range Cabinet Doors in your chosen colour.

4th coat - Dulux® Renovation Range Cabinet Doors in your chosen colour.

You will need at least two coats on the MDF and must sand lightly after them.

You could likely go down to 180-grit sandpaper to assist in removing any residual glue. As far as I can tell from the images, your doors are looking fairly smooth at the moment. Are they smooth to the touch or can you feel the glue on the surface?

I will do as per your instructions. Between 1st and 2nd coats and between 3rd and 4 coats what sand paper should I use ?

what about Laminate and edges ? How many primer coats do they need ?

my mdf doors smooth to touch but I can see feel edges some glue ( when touch ) because is little glossy .

as soon as I sand ( my hand ) glue stick to sand paper and can not use sand paper for long .

Please see photos , I had some old 120 p I used .

When I scrape with scraper I can see some glue is coming off specially from the edges . I am not sure what size sand paper I should use ?

left one is not clean and right one is sand and clean .it took me 2 hours for 4 drawers.

how much clean do I need to do ? Do I need to clean all the glue ?

EricL advise to use Roybi random 300W sander , do I need sand paper with that ?

Between the first and second coat of primer, 240grit should be fine. You must knock off the little spikey bits proud of the surface. If you can run your hand over the surface, you shouldn't be able to feel any bumps.

Only one coat of the primer is required on laminate or edging.

How to apply: Wash brushes and rollers prior to use. Remove any loose fibres and hairs. Cut in as necessary using a 38-50mm high quality angled sash cutter brush. Coat surface using a 4mm nap 100mm wide microfibre roller. Lay off. Once each section is coated, gently go over the surface in the same direction with an unloaded roller using minimal pressure. This will give a smooth consistent finish. Using poor quality or worn rollers can affect the final finish achieved. Allow four hours between application of primer and topcoat.

It sounds like a power sander would speed up the process. This must be hard work by hand. The sander @Eric mentioned will come with a small amount of sandpaper, but you should pick up more at the same time.

It would be best if you removed all the glue from the surface. Perhaps you could try a bladed scraper to remove the bulk of the glue before sanding. Be very careful not to gouge the timber surface, though.

I am following your all the instructions .

I had to use power sander with 60 gritt to remove the glue . Bladed Scraper did not help though .

Used lots of Pad.

Done 2 coats Dulux Precision Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker . rest of the steps will happen in coming days .

Could I please ask do I need any sanding with 400 gritt between 3rd and 4th coat ?

I'd only sand if you have any imperfections or rough patches @mmd22. Otherwise, don't sand it if it is smooth and looks good.

Thank you for your all the advise for painting Vinyl wrap . I really appreciate your support .

As promised I have going to upload some photos after I painted the MDF kitchen cabinet .

We are very happy with the result .We painted with Natural White .after Painting

The reason we had to paint is our kitchen cabinet was with Vinyl Wrap and it was coming off so I had to put glue on.
