Suitable glue for attaching metal legs to solid glass table [REPAIR]

Hi guys,

I need some help with this particular project.

I have a large piece of glass that is the tabletop for our dining room table. Unfortunately when it was moved the guys twisted off a leg instead of removing it properly so I have three legs which can be attached and one that cannot.

I am after recommendations on a suitable glue that will dry clear (important so it cannot be seen from the right side) , be strong enough to support the weight of the table and the things that go on top and dries fairly quickly (I don't have the ability to hold it or clamp it).

I will try to add photos but I don't think this website likes my phone...

I have access to a bunnings, a rural supplies store, standard auto stores (recon, super cheap etc) and I can travel so long as the destination is on a train line or public transport - I don't have access to credit card mail order type businesses - so local or warragul accessible places only please!!

Hi Sammie, I would use "clear araldite" its a two tube mix of clear glue and hardener, You may wish to try it first with a glass bottle or similar and a piece of steel, just for piece of mind 🙂 but I have glued glass and steel before very successfully. Just a thought though, its likely your frame is painted, and unless the paint is well adhered to the frame, that will be your weak point. If its not painted then no worries 🙂

Btw, araldite is available from most supermarkets, hardware stores and bunnings stores 🙂

That's a good question..... how do I work out if the legs are painted? I don't think they are (they are not chromed) but not sure. There is a small amount of rust on the leg so I don't think it's painted.....

I recently performed a very similar fix, I had a piece of glass that had 3 mountings on it that had come off. Ran down to Bunnings and grabbed some araldite epoxy rated to 150kgs. It needs to set for 24 hours but it will provide the best adhesion. There are fasting setting ones available but if you want a strong lasting fix go with the slowest setting epoxy.

Only other advice I can add is use it sparingly, I used too much then had to cut a lot of it back off before it set! Best way to remove it before it has set is to use a blade to cut it away off the glass.

Everything moves slow for me, so I'm only just getting around to photographing the table (and I don't think I did a very good job) is there a way to upload a series of photos? I've got a out another 6 I want to put up for a project I've completed but it's taken me a really long time to upload the garden pics and the metal leg pics lol

This sounds a bit daft, bear with me, but do you think I'd find someone who has a small amount left in a tube I could get? It looks like a tube will set me back about $15 which I know isn't alot, but I'm on a pension, so money is tight and after moving in Jan and then Feb I'm thinking I won't be able to pick up a tube for a few months. Lol. I'm not worried about the time of repair, we have been given a spare dining table to eat at. If not, all good, I'll just wait for MIL to visit 🙂 she loves bunnings lol

I couldn't tell if they were painted (bit daft like that) so anyone know how to tell?

Thanks very much for uploading those photos. Sorry that you had trouble.

You can add multiple images to a single discussion post like this one, and it's certainly better than putting them on the gallery as other community members won't be able to find them very easily there. The gallery is better used for showing off single images.

Aha, that makes things clearer, it looks like aluminium feet, if not polished steel, but its weight should tell you 🙂 and if its rust its steel, so I doubt there will be any paint on the surface, so just clean up the surface to be glued, perhaps with a Steelo Pad/pot scourer, All the old glue needs to go. make sure the glass is perfectly clean, perhaps wipe with Metholated spirits, make sure its dry when finished, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE ARALDITE. 👍😀 apply araldite to centre of foot as well as a few dabs well in from the edge. Once you have both surfaces together, use the spatula to wipe away any excess from edge. If you think about it when applying glue try to get good amount in middle and less between that and outer ring, when you put it together the centre dolop will spread out, hopefully not past the edge if you get it right..
