How to mount Matrix panels to farm gate?

Hello, I’m hoping to install Matrix panels to my 1200 x 3600 farm gate. Is there a thin lightweight waterproof timber they should be mounted on first or would they be strong enough just mounted to the frame (I’m hoping to cut the mesh out so it can’t be seen through the matrix panel design). Any advise on mounting to the tubular surround is greatly appreciated, in addition info on what panels to purchase/cutting down/bracing option to fit this size please. THANK YOU

Thank you for sharing your question about mounting Matrix panels to your farm gate. I suggest using Porta 40 x 18mm 2.4m Moulding H3 Treated Pine DAR. This timber is treated to H3 and is protected from rot, fungal decay and termite attack. If you wish to add one more layer of protection you can paint it as well.

To mount the timber to your farm gate, I recommend using Carinya Make-A-Bracket. You can mount them in almost any direction and they can be cut down to size so that you only need one bracket to do the entire fence. To screw the bracket to the timber, I suggest using Zenith 8G x 20mm Tufcote® Countersunk Head Treated Pine Screws. These crews are designed to go into treated timber and can be used outside.

I propose putting one timber piece horizontally at the top and bottom of your farm gate. You can then mount the Matrix panel directly onto the timber frame.

Hi @nicoledee,

Perhaps @EricL might have intended for you to use Carinya 20 x 600 x 1mm Flat Make-a-Bracket - single, wrap it around the tubular steel of the fence and then screw it into the treated pine from both sides.

Another option might be to pre-drill your treated timber and screw up through it into the pipe with self-tapping screws. Furthermore, you could do away with the timber altogether and screw the Matrix panels directly to the tubular steel.

Hi Eric,

I have the same gate.

Could I attached the Bunnnings rough cut fence pailings straight on the metal? What screws should I use?
My dogs can fit through the fence as it is and I was hoping to attach fence palings in the same manner I have on either side of the gate. See my image. Thank you so

Let me tag @nicoledee as well to make sure that they are aware of your question. In regards to your other query about palings, I believe it is possible to screw the palings directly into your metal fence. I suggest using Zenith 12G x 35mm Galvanised Hex Head Metal Screws - 12 Pack or similar. My best advice is to predrill pilot holes both into the metal frame and timber paling. This will make it easy to install. Your goal is to have the screw just long enough to through the paling and anchor on properly to the metal gate frame.

However, a word of caution, adding palings to your metal fence will increase its weight and put a lot of strain on both the metal frame assembly and its hinges. Please take this into consideration during your decision-making process. As an alternative, I would endorse your idea of using Matrix panels as they are significantly lighter and provide a great deal of choice in regards to pattern and design.

The added weight you are suggesting I think will cause gate issues as it is.

You could get around this by using Easyroll 100mm 55kg Load Swivel Gate Castor and a stay wire to the top of your post. Maybe add an extra bracket to the post/gate side.

You may need to provide a smoother surface for the support wheel to run in an arc, I am unsure how much play there is in the height of the gate castor and also how much slope your driveway has.

@EricL makes an excellent point about the added weight which @Dave-1 has come up with the perfect solution you will need to implement. These small 6mm saddles and gal screws could be used to fix the failing to the wire. Then longer self drilling metal screws into the gate frame.
