What epoxy sealer or top coat after Dy-Mark 8L Slate Epoxy Coat Garage Floor Kit?

Hi,

I finished Epoxy Coat for my garage last night and now i am thinking of doing the top coat/ sealant before moving things.

Please refer to an epoxy sealant similar to "Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss EpoxyShield Premium Concrete And Garage Coating" which is cost-effective. I do not want to spend $200 and my garage is about 34sqmeters.

Yes spend the( $200x 2 as one tin does 23m2 only ) to clear coat will protect your first layer but can i highly recommend you add an anti skid additive..

So do you spend the extra money $400 plus and have it looking great for many many years ? The clear coat of it gets damaged stained into the future can be polished back and redone. Can your existing floor be polished or will the pattern be destroyed?

$400 + extra is a lot of money so your existing floor looks great by the way it will last you well too, no wrong choices here.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @abhishekj26. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about clear coating over the Dymark epoxy garage floor kit.

I'm unaware of a clearcoat designed to go over this kit as it is a one-step product, unlike the Rustoleum system. It's a durable product, suitable for trafficked areas, and no clear protective coat is needed. A concern I have about applying any clearcoat over it is that it will need to bind to the epoxy, whereas your epoxy has bound to a porous substrate. If something were to fail, it would likely be at the weakest point, where the clear coat attaches to the paint.

I have previously spoken with Dymark and Rustoleum about applying the Rustoleum clear coat over the Dymark products. Unfortunately, no testing has been done, so they cannot comment on whether this would work.

Thanks all, after a bit of research, finished this project with Rustoleum rock solid clear coat.

NIce NIce NIce bet your glad you did the clear coat now.

Later on 10 years a quick sand back and a re coat with out touching the pattern layer.

This product is no longer available in Australia, is there any other recommendations?

I have just used the same product and found the finish to be good but the flakes to only be lighted affixed to the surface and would prefer a clear coat.

Hi @harrisonp,

I've received a response from Dymark. While they haven't tested the Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss EpoxyShield Premium Concrete And Garage Coating over their product, they have received customer feedback indicating that it can be applied.

The Rust-Oleum clear coat should be applied over the Dy-Mark Epoxy Coat after 48 hours. If you wait longer, a barrier may form on the surface of the Dy-Mark Epoxy, and you'll need to prepare the surface for the clear coat to adhere properly.

If preparation is necessary, lightly sand the entire surface with 120-grit sandpaper, then vacuum up any dust and debris. Wipe down the surface with a clean cloth and a small amount of Isopropyl alcohol.

Once the surface is ready, apply the Clear Coat and allow it to dry for 7 days to ensure full curing.

Can I ask when you applied the top coat? Did you wait the full 7 days for epoxy to cure then apply, or did you do it after 48hrs? I’m finding varying info. How has it held up a year later? Many thanks x

In general, you should follow the instructions given by the manufacturer of the product as they test the product and warrant its use based on that testing.

If you can advise which products you are looking to use, I can find the recommended curing times and advise further.

Hey mate doubt you'll see this since your post is two years old but.

I'm about to do the exact same as you and am curious to how well it's held up over the past two years? Any peeling, fading or yellowing?

And also how did you apply it over the colour drymark stuff? How long after laying the drymark down did you do the clear? Did you sand the colour first?

Hey mate, everything’s fine so far. It does tend to chip when something heavy falls on it, but overall it’s holding up well. I have maintained it by laying marine carpet on top, and I even park my car on it, so it’s still going strong.
