How to fix the clamp from irrigation pipe?

Hi,

The garden irrigation pipe clamp breaks and the water leaks preventing the water from flowing to the garden beds. I have replaced the clamp several times, but each time when the tap is opened the clamp breaks / jumps out. The irrigation pipe is between the retaining wall garden bed and fence. Please let me know what needs to be done to fix this problem.

Hello @Gardenhelp

I suggest changing the plastic clamp and replacing it with a Steel Hose Clamp. It is able to handle higher pressures and will prevent the barbed end from jumping out. Please make sure that the elbow is inserted deeply into the pipe. The clamp must be applied past the barbed end of the elbow.

Hi Eric

I have purchased the steel clamps as I am having the same problem with leaking at joins.

When you say past the barb end do you mean from the join down? I now have metal screws and plastic clamps either side of the barb and I still have leakage. I have reduced tap pressure a bit too.

Essentially the steel hose clamp should be positioned in the same location as where a plastic one would go. It just allows you to tighten it better. It should be positioned as per the image below.

Hi @LizE,

Your metal screw clamps are certainly positioned correctly, so I can't say for sure why it would be leaking.

You could try removing the clamps and inspecting the hose and joiner for any cracks or debris. If there are cracks, then you would need to replace the damaged part. If there is debris, giving it a quick clean, and maybe a light going over with some sandpaper to remove any debris before reattaching things could help.

Another thing to consider is that overtightening the clamps can cause issues. Aim for them to be tight but not to the point that the pipe deforms as this can create openings that water can leak out of.
