How to fix a broken downpipe?

Hi all,

I am trying to fix a jagged old broken downpipe. I have purchased what I thought was the correct connector, removed the old broken piece and trimmed back the jagged lower piece (and painted the downpipe itself as part of a bigger backyard reno) but now I'm not sure if I'm on the right track? I thought the new piece would slip over the piece in the ground but they are the exact same size.

How do I seal the two together to make it watertight? I've seen both plumbers putty and tape online would either of these work? Or do I need a different plumbing piece?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's fantastic to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about fixing your downpipe.

I suggest slipping in a Vinidex 100 x 90mm PVC Stormwater Draincoil Adaptor but in reverse. In this manner, the large funnel part of the adapter slips into the frog flap with PVC extension and the smaller part will go into the agi pipe. I recommend using Selleys 290ml Clear Storm Waterproof Gutter And Roof Sealant to link the adaptor to the PVC.

I've drawn up a quick sketch below to give you an idea of how they need to be linked together.
