How do you treat weeds on a lawn?

I have different types of weeds that have taken over the lawn. Is there a spray that is safe for pets to kill these?

As, I'll be planting grass seeds after the removal of the weeds, can you please identify the type of grass I have . What will be the best season to plant grass seeds? Do I use a top soil?

Thanks for sharing your question about treating weeds on your lawn. The first two photos clearly show that those areas have been taken over by weeds. I recommend physically removing all the weeds in this area and rejuvenating the soil with Yates 30L Waterwise Granular Soil Wetter, Scotts Lawn Builder 25L Organic Lawn Soil Topdress & Underlay and Munns Professional 10kg Instant Turf And Seed Starter Fertiliser. This should be enough to prepare the area for replantation.

Looking at the next two photos it looks like you have Zoysia grass and it seems that the weeds are making themselves at home. Would it be possible for you to post a closer photo of the weeds and see if they are interlinked by a branch? As a first step, I suggest removing them from the area so that they can't spread further. One thing we can be sure about weeds is that they grow back in large numbers.

I'd look at using Roundup for Lawns which is a selective broadleaf lawn spot spray that is safe to use on all lawn types with the exception of Queensland Blue Couch. As it is a spot spray, you need only apply it to those patches of weeds that it will control, not over the lawn in its entirety. It will not, however, eradicate grass-type weeds in lawns.

The only restriction regarding pets is to keep them out of the treated area until the spray has completely dried, which will usually be a matter of only a few hours, or less on a bright sunny day.

Certainly worth trying on the clover/oxalis type weeds and even the large clump of weeds that look like they have just recently germinated.
