Spray painted screen door

A dated security screen door was given a makeover using spray paint.

The project

We originally planned on replacing the cream-coloured screen door for a new security door that didn't have the diamond grille. The screen door worked perfectly fine and it seemed like a waste to replace it just for aesthetic reasons. Instead, we decided to paint the diamond grille section black to give it a less-dated look.

All up, the project cost around $100 as opposed to replacing it for a brand new door around $1000.

Tools and materials

Tools and materials used:

Two cans of Dulux Duramax Satin Black Spray Paint
One can of Dulux Duramax Gloss White Spray Paint
A good quality painter's tape
Rolltrak White Keyed Hinged Screen Door Lock.

Steps

Step 1

We removed the screen door from the door frame and gave it a thorough clean using pressure washer. We wiped it down with a grease removing spray and left it in the sun for a couple of hours to dry. You can also use a leaf blower or compressed air to blow out any water that it trapped in the screen mesh or tight crevices.

Step 2

We started with the back side of the door and taped off the mesh area.

We then sprayed on the gloss white enamel spray paint onto the door frame. Once it was touch-dry, we turned the door over and repeat the same step on the front side.

Step 3

Repeat step 2 on both sides after the first coat has dried.

Step 4

Once the newly painted white screen frame has dried and cured, tape up the screen frame and paint the diamond grille and security mesh. This part is a little more time consuming because of all the angles you have to spray the diamond grille at.

Step 5

We replaced the screen door lock for a Rolltrak screen door lock.

did you sand before spray painting? As i know the paint might not last long without sanding

Let me mention @homeinmelbourne to see if they can answer your question.

Depending on the quality of the existing paint and its gloss level, you might require sanding. If the paint is powdery or peeling away, you'd need to prepare the surface before applying paint. If it's a high gloss paint, then scuffing the surface with 240-grit sandpaper will go a long way to helping the topcoat adhere correctly. Given the nature of screen doors, it would be difficult to sand all the security screen, so I'd recommend you consider using Flood 300g ESP Surface Prep Spray instead. It's suitable for gloss paint and will allow your topcoat to bond to the hard-to-paint surface.

Front entrance door renovation

I did change my screen as well. The old plastic styled one had some holes in it and I also wanted a screen that wouldnt tear as easily.

From a painting perspective, odds are the fly wire was removed before painting the screen door. It would have been very difficult to mask the interior side of the fly wire. But let's wait for @homeinmelbourne to confirm.

@Dave-1 I find it quite easy to do, just try to clean as much as I can and find enough cover for the door to spray on. You certainly don't want to leave a mark on your floor when spaying the mesh.

You can buy the new door handle but I don't bother with it, just paint it white and It doesn't look bad too. I will leave the door for a couple of months to see if the paint is peeled off or not.
