How to seal the bottom of Colourbond fence?

There is a small gap between the bottom of my Colourbond fence and the ground which allows all the leaves from my neighbours hedge to enter my property. It’s frustrating and I would like to know how to block this gap?

Also, the ground under the fence is soil and weeds grow there. How can I stop this weed growth? Perhaps matting or small rocks?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @rc1. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about closing a gap on a Colorbond fence.

I'd suggest using 150 x 25mm 4.8m Plinth H4 Treated Pine Sawn Wet and screwing it to the posts at either end of the space with self-tapping screws. Alternatively, you could place timber stakes in the ground and screw the board to those. The team in-store can cut the timber down to the required length for you.

For the weed issue, I'd suggest removing 5cm of that mulch, placing down weed matting and filling over it with pebbles or mulch.

Hi Mitchel,

Great advice above. I am facing the same challenge at the moment and wanted to clarify if the sleeper suggestion is ok for an area which I am turning into a vegetable garden and another section (along the same fence) that will be a kids sand pit? My concern was the CCA treatment and I could not find an equivalent Treated Pine which is not CCA treated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you join us.

In applications such as children's sand pits and vegetable gardens, I always advise MicroPro sleepers as opposed to CCA treated sleepers.

MicroPro sleepers utilise MCA (Micronized Copper Azole) as opposed to CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate).

This is a milder chemical treatment that does not contain chromium or arsenic but still gives a similar level of protection against fungal decay, termites, and other wood-destroying insects.

Unfortunately, MicroPro sleepers might not be available in your location. I suggest chatting with a helpful timber specialist at your local Bunnings store to see what option might suit your needs. In some locations, we will also stock hardwood sleepers, which are suitable for sandpits and veggie gardens.
