How to repair cracked ceiling and peeling paint?

Hi everyone 

the house needs maintenance and was advised to rake between the cornices and wall and then paint. Sounds dead simple but I'm sure there's more detail than that. Can anyone flesh this out for me as I'm really not sure where to start. Scapers? Polyfiller? Gapfiller? Primer?

Is the cornice still well attached? If so, you can take a scraper and scratch out all the loose material between the cornice and the wall. Next, fill the gap with plaster gap filler and wait for it to dry. Sand the area using a float to recreate the sharp edges and return. The float is handy as it gives you a relatively flat and long surface which results in crisp angles. If you hand sand you'll end up with a wonky and wavy transition from the cornice to the wall. Once you've sanded the area, prime it with an undercoat and paint with your choice of wall paint.

If the cornice itself is a bit loose, you should try and squeeze some construction adhesive up behind it from the bottom edge. Some clouts through the cornice into the wall will also assist in stabilizing it.
