I wanted to create something special for my daughter when she moved from cot to bed.
Toddler bed inspiration using Ikea Sandvik extendable bed. This bed went from white to natural wood colour.
First I sanded down all of the pieces that were white, excluding the middle part of the both endings. They are not timber. I used three different sanders plus sandpaper. I had sandpaper ready for small final touches. I would probably be able to use only one sander but I wanted to explore the differences.
These are the sanders I used:
Bosch belt sander: 80 grit
ozito Random Orbital Sander: 60grit +120grit
Skil Orbital Sander
AEG power tools multifunction tool for sanding corners.
I sanded all the parts before building the bed.
Then I painted the bed pieces. I used Cabots' benchtops clear satin finish.
After that I build the bed.
Then I soaked the rattan. ( It is easier to attach and not so stiff to work with when you soak the rattan first. ) I mounted rattan to the bed heads using stable gun.
After that I cut mouldings to 45 degree miter joint, and added it top of the rattan like a frame so the edges look better.
Finally I added one more detail by adding hand carved wood applique.
