How do I patch and/or divert this gutter downpoint?

Hey!

Before I bought my house, presumably when it was subdivided, a gutter near the boundary of the lot has had the downpipe removed. The hole however remains and is now causing a dampness issue for my next door neighbour.

I also have a missing downpipe at the front of the house on the front gutter.

How to I patch that gutter hole? Furthermore, how do I install a downpipe on the front gutter as shown in the second image?

Will I be able to divert the water from the side gutter to the front gutter?

Neighbour has offered that I can shunt it over to her gutter, but I don't know if that will be best in the long run.

It sounds like it might be best to have a roof drainage specialist come and look at what's happening here. Before you complete any work yourself, check with your local council, as roof drainage requires a professional for installation in many areas.

If there were a downpipe that was removed, I'd suggest it needs to be replaced. The front gutter looks like it's had an opening created for water to drain out. Is there a downpipe at the other end of the gutter? If so, I'd suggest the fall on the gutter isn't correct, and this hole was created to allow captured water to drain out. You can bend the metal back into place and seal it with silicone. A small patch of tin over the area would assist in the repair. A downpipe can be attached to the gutter with a dropper outlet. You could then connect pipe to where the old downpipe was attached and divert that water to the new front downpipe. That downpipe will then need to be directed to the stormwater line.

It's quite hard to advise on the next steps without a thorough assessment of the roof and knowing where your water is designed to drain. I'd recommend determining where your stormwater line is and deciding on the best approach to direct water there.

Thanks for that! It looks like the front gutter only has the one downpipe. There is one on the other side of the house at the front, but its a completely different gutter. Maybe this is a job for a professional. Thanks

There's a cold front coming this weekend. Do you have any advice for a temporary fix? Could I pop cheap pipe under the hold to divert it to the front of my house while I wait for a professional?

If I continue to let it leak my neighbours wall will keep getting damp.

Hi @mrbianos

On the condition that the size of the gutter is standard, I suggest looking at installing a Rain Harvesting 90 / 100mm Dual Fit Leaf Catcha Round Rain Head in conjunction with the Grunt 100um x 25m Temporary Polythene Downpipe.

In order to install the Leaf Catcha, it has to be screwed into the side of the house under the gutter with a Zenith 10G x 15mm Stainless Steel Pan Head Sheet Metal Screws and sealed off with Selleys 290ml Clear Storm Waterproof Gutter And Roof Sealant.

The temporary down pipe is then taped on to the bottom end of the Leaf Catcha. The temporary downpipe is then directed out towards the street away from your house.

Please take all necessary safety precautions when working at height, always remember to wear personal safety gear such as gloves and goggles.
