Smart front door lock installation

After much debate in the family we decided to install a smart lock as one of our kids locked himself outside for a entire day 😂. Did some research online and went for a lock which had the following features

• Number Pad
• Auto lock upon leaving the home
• Unlock from phone or using keypad
• Proximity unlock (hands free unlock)
• minimal design
• East to install and maintain

We went for the Yale Smart Lock 2, as it had all features and was on special. The lock is actually a deadbolt and most smart locks run on batteries. This one is suppose to have a six month cycle before we have to swap out the batteries. Very easy to install, just follow the online instructions. We have been using the lock now for several months and its great, no more keys and we just use the number pad or phone to unlock. 

Materials

Smart Lock from Bunnings or another retailer 

Tools

• Cordless Drill
• Spade bit
• Philips head Screwdriver
• Smart Phone to download Yale Access App

Steps

Step 1

Before buying the smart lock, make sure your exisiting lock cutout measurements are compatible with the new smart lock.

Step 2

Remove the old lock and put this aside, you can use this this lock for another door or give it away on FB marketplace  

Step 3

Follow the installation instructions. Most smart lock companies have a App with step by step video instructions. You will also need to install a door sensing device, use a spade bit to drill out a cavity to insert the sensor. 

Step 4

Once installed, download the correct app and connect to the smart device. For me, this was the hardest step as we had to do some troubleshooting to get the Yale Access App.
