How to repaint my carport floor?

That coating is quite extensively degraded, so I'd recommend you consider using the Rust-Oleum 3.78L Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer and either the Rust-Oleum 3.78L Armour Grey Concrete And Garage Floor Paint or Rust-Oleum 3.78L Battleship Grey Concrete And Garage Floor Paint. Our other concrete paints would require you to remove the current coating entirely.

There are plenty of concrete paints that will resist pickup from hot car tires. However, there are very few concrete paints designed to coat over an already degraded coating. You might like to post some images of the damage to your coating so our members can better assess its condition. Let me know if you need a hand uploading images.

Most concrete paints are designed to go onto bare concrete or over a coating that is in good to excellent condition. With degraded coatings, the manufacturers of these paints can't warranty their products as the condition of your existing paint is unknown. There is the Rust-Oleum 3.78L Concrete and Garage Recoat Primer, which will allow you to paint over your degraded coating with either Rust-Oleum 3.78L Armour Grey Concrete And Garage Floor Paint or Rust-Oleum 3.78L Battleship Grey Concrete And Garage Floor Paint. Those are the two colours that are compatible with the Recoat primer.

With the re-coat primer would it be a good idea to give the whole area a rough sanding especially those flaking areas?

Here are the application instructions @Margolin22. You'll need to use a wire brush or wheel to remove any loose, flaking and peeling paint. There's no requirement to sand, but if you were to sand the edges of the peeled sections, it would help blend them in and give you a more uniform finish.

Two weeks ago you gave me some excellent advice and as I mentioned I purchased your recommended products. I am preparing the surface by removing the old paint where the tyres rested using a heat gun and sander. How far should I go with this please and will the primer adhere? Please see images of some of this work.

That's looking good, @Margolin22.

The primer will adhere to the surface. However, if you are at the point where the paint is well adhered, then the only thing to consider is trying to minimise the transition lines from bare concreted to the painted surface. There's a noticeable height difference between the two. This height difference will be seen after the concrete is painted. To get a perfect finish and minimise this height discrepancy, you should feather the edges of the chipped areas to minimise this stepped look. The more work you can do here to feather the edges, the less likely you'll see these sections after the final topcoat. A good indicator is if you can feel the transition between painted areas and bare concrete with your fingertips. Keep sanding the chipped edges smooth until you can feel them.

Thank for your ongoing help with my carport floor project

I had intended to prepare the floor by treating the existing paint, some of which was lifting and flaking. You advised to clean those areas and feather the edges. I started this but decided to strip the whole floor which I have now completed after a combination of pressure washing, hot gun, paint stripper and swearing!

It is now back to bare concrete. I have to fill in a few cracks and holes where the aggregate has been exposed. Do you have suggestions for cleaning and will I need to etch before the Primer and then Paint?

It's always a good idea to etch the concrete to provide a prepared surface for the paint. However, I recommend using the etcher that is the same brand as the paint you'll be using on your garage floor. There are some etchers with a cleaning component in them, but if you happen to choose one that does not have one. I suggest washing it first with regular water and detergent. Make sure to wash off all the detergent before using the etcher.

a few weeks back you helped me get started on my garage floor project. I explained that existing paint was flaking off and you advised how to deal with that and you recommended two Rustoleum products

- concrete and garage recoat primer and

- concrete and garage floor paint

After trying to deal with the flaking paint I decided to take it all off. That is completed and I have cleaned it and used Rustoleum Etch solution. It is now drying for 24 hours.

Can I assume that I can still use the above products in sequence?

I had some great advice from you re painting my garage floor and purchased Rustoleum Concrete and Garage Floor Recoat Primer and Concrete and Garage floor Paint and Primer. I didn't start the project due to the very hot weather here and planned to wait until March. I am having second thoughts and wondering if I should have purchased the Rustoleum Epoxy option.

What do you think?

Hi Graham (@Margolin22),

The original products I recommended were only done so as they were needed for your compromised surface. Now that you've removed the existing paint, that opens up the option of using the Epoxy range. If you wanted different colours or a slightly stronger coating, I'd recommend returning the other unused products and swapping them out for an epoxy coating.

I took you advice and purchased the Rustoleum Epoxy for the 2.5 cars garage and have applied it today with the chips. The pack that I bought had two pouches and I have only used one. Could I use the second one over the top of the first.

If the epoxy that you've applied has already dried, you would have to put an additional coat over the top to keep the decorative chips in place. Rustoleum's Clear Gloss EpoxyShield Premium Concrete And Garage Coating would be the best product for this.

As I indicated I have another pouch of the epoxy and rather than throw it out can I put that over the top of the existing epoxy coat that I applied a few days ago. I have flakes too. I can apply the clear gloss over that.
