How to fix bubbling paint on porch ceiling?

Hello Everyone

I have noticed few places on my Porch celling is bubbling and one place plaster or paint fell off .

I have noticed previously there was some water stored on to top of roof .

How could I fix the roof and celling ?
Do I need waterproofing the roof ?

I am not sure if the celling is rendered then paint or they used rendered like paint ?

( I heard Dulux has outdoor paint that can look like rendered wall )

How easy difficult it would be colour match as front of my house is same colour and I do. It have any paint .

Looking at the thickness, I'd suggest it's a cement-based render.

The paint/render could be flaking purely due to its age. If water is pooling on the roof and seeping through to the underside, then that could also cause it to flake. I'd recommend removing any paint/render that is flaking or deteriorating on the underside with a metal scraper. Once the loose material has been removed, you can sand the edges of the area smooth with 120-grit sandpaper until they are not so defined.

Next, apply an exterior waterproofer to the topside of the roof. Is there a way for the water to drain off the roof? If not, it would be worth drilling a hole to allow that, as you certainly don't want a pond water-feature on your roof.

You'll then be able to prime and paint the underside of the roof. There is a range of Dulux texture coatings available to select from. To colour match, you'll need to flake off a 20-cent size piece of the render and take that in-store with you. Due to the rough surface, you might need to select the closest match from the colour cards.

It's a bit hard to tell from your images, but if the render is of a significant thickness, you'll need to fill the chipped section to match and be flush with the surrounding area. If the render is, say, 3mm thick, it would be hard to smooth out the area with sandpaper along, and the Dulux products will struggle to cover the damage.

Thank you so much again for your valuable advise .

I did not see any water coming through from roof to celling but I saw some water coming down from edges of the porch . I have a small drain with pipe on the roof for water drainage but some times it gets blocked with leaves . It feels to me the drain in not big enough.

you are right it could be age of the house . My house was built 1946 but I believe it was painted December 2021 just before I brought it .

Would you recommend to remove all the render / paint of only affected area only ?

Any recommendation for outside water proofer ? Is it hard to do water proofing outside ?

As you mentioned if the render is of a significant thickness ( I would not be more that 2-3 mm please see photos ) it would be hard to match smooth with sandpaper.

What products would you recommend to fill the chipped section and flush with surrounding area ?

After repairing and prime the area , should i paint whole porch or the affected area only ?

Looking at the extra pictures you posted it seems like it is just a very thick coating of textured paint. If you are not pressed for time, I would suggest taking all of the old paint off and putting a fresh new coat on the ceiling. But if the old paint is still in good condition, you can also choose to just repair the damaged area.

Waterproofing is relatively straightforward. The surface must be clean and free of dirt and debris. Any mould or mildew on the surface must be removed before applying anything. It does however become difficult when working on a ladder. Plus, you'll also need to climb on top of the porch to apply the sealer there as well. These are some of things you'll need to take into consideration.

If you are hesitant in doing work in high places like me, I propose engaging the services of a painter or handy person.

In regards to the water proofer and paint, I would go with what @MitchellMc has recommended. That would be the Bastion Exterior Waterproof Membrane and the Dulux Texture Coatings. Please make sure to bring as many sample chips as you can to the paint specialist at the store.

Thank you for your input .

I actually do not need work on Ladder as I can land on my porch as it is large enough .

I wish I could fix all the bubble area and paint but I am not sure if Bunnings would be able to match the colour .

If I get matching Dulux Texture Coating, what should I use to fill the chipped and bubble area ?

Hello @mmd22

If you manage to get a matching textured colour, I suggest using a paint roller. As I mentioned in my last post there is no need for extra filler for your ceiling as the paint is only very thick. The new textured paint is very thick as well, so you can use the textured paint directly on the chipped area.

Please don't forget to waterproof the top of the ceiling and the bottom as well, otherwise the paint will bubble again.

Thank you for your reply .

Most of the paint work (probably 85-90%) is very good .

I wonder if I paint only on chipped area , will the new paint fill in chipped area ?

I know you gave me instructions on your previous reply but
For the waterproofing do I need to prepare the area specifically top of the porch ?
how do I clean that area ? Do I need to clean it ?

Hello @mmd22

For the top porch, I suggest washing the surface with water and detergent with a stiff bristle broom to remove any dirt and debris on the surface. Make sure to wash off all the soap, when the surface is totally dry you can then cover it with the Bastion Exterior Waterproof Membrane.
