Bedside tables makeover

These bedsides were dark and worn and needed a refresh.

Materials

Cabots stain and varnish and had it tinted in colour Brazilian roast (waterbase)

Cabots Cabothane satin clear sealer

Sand paper 80,120, 240 grit and 400 grit paper

Tools

Makita orbital sander

Steps

Step 1

After sanding them back to reveal the natural timber I decided to stain them.

I used Cabot's stain and varnish in colour Brazilian roast.

However as this stain colour is a very dark colour I mixed a very small amount of the stain with Cabot's cabothane satin clear sealer.

Approx 1x part stain to 5x parts clear sealer.

Thank you so much for sharing your bedside table makeover project. Your painting process has really made the timber grain pop out. Pronounced but not overpowering, it really gives off that relaxed coastal feel. When combined with the accessories in the room, it really fits in nicely. I'll definitely include this in my bookmarks.

This is lovely and I just purchased this stain today. May I please ask, did you apply with a brush? Interested to know the application method as they look flawless!

Apologies in delay in replying to you.

I used a brush for my application.

The colour stain is very dark so remember to dilute it down with the clear waterbased sealer. 👌 Such as cabothane clear.

Thank you so much for all the information @inspiredbycoast this is the first of 2 coats and is absolutely the colour I was looking for to go on top of these drawers. I’ll be using this across the rest of the furniture I’m up cycling for our home too!

Love this. Am about to embark on staining my dining table. Never knew you could mix the stain. So, is it just mixed with the water based varnish? Also, do I need to then add a layer of varnish when complete? 🤓

Yes you can dilute waterbased stains by mixing them with waterbased clear sealers. I tend to use Cabot's cabothane clear or benchtop sealer. For a table I would recommend Cabot's benchtop sealer. And yes once you have applied your diluted stain colour mix , you can seal it all again with just a clear coat over the top for your finish
