Why are my tomato plants not growing more fruit?

Hello Team,

Hope you all had an excellent Christmas.

This is regarding my tomato plants, I noticed that new tomatoes are not produced in my plants compared to two months before. Is it normal or some issues with my plants? Please advise.

Yes, I fertilize it regularly with Richgro Black Marvel Tomato Liq Fert Conc. I shared a few pics as recommended for reference. You can see that there are many buds but no new tomatoes.

The plants look very healthy and the current crop of tomatoes are growing and ripening well, so it is probably nothing you are doing (or not doing).

It is possible that, with warmer temperatures in mid summer, there are fewer pollinator insects around at present, so the flowers are not being pollinated. It may also be that the plants are not physically capable of producing more fruits even though they might still be flowering - some varieties flower and fruit earlier in the season than others and will not set any further fruits when the weather becomes too warm..

You have a reasonably good crop ripening now - perhaps next year you could stagger your plantings over a longer period or choose a range of different varieties so you will have fruit over a longer period.

Hi @Noelle - thanks a lot for the valuable insights as usual. Yes there are hardly any flowers I could see and understood that is the reason for not getting new tomatoes. Being a 1st time gardener, I am happy with the outcome so far (all because of the team's guidance and advice), I harvested 3 times so far and got around 12-14 tomatoes and still waiting for others to ripen.

Will the vine produce tomatoes in autumn and winter? If not, should I have to prune or cut the plants or I should leave it as is for the next season? Please advise.

Tomatoes are what are known as annual plants - that is, they grow, flower, fruit then die off all within a couple of seasons or a year at most. In most parts of Australia, seeds are sown or seedlings are put in the ground from mid spring spring, they start flowering in late spring and early summer, ripen their fruit in summer and then, when the crop has been picked or the weather cools off in late summer/autumn, the plants die off.

Once all your tomatoes have ripened and there are no others starting develop, the plants are finished and should be pulled out of the garden or from pots if that's where you have them growing.

They will not survive through the winter normally, unless you live in the tropics or have a heated glasshouse in which to grow them.

I agree with @Noelle; that's a wonderful crop, and the plant itself likely couldn't sustain much more fruit. I'd be very happy with that result as it far exceeds the crop I get per plant.

Hello Team,

Would you please advise why there are two different coloured leaves in my tomato plant - top leaves are green and bottom looks yellowish/faded? Should I have to take any action or is that normal?

Hi @balaji27

Some times under watering can be the cause and when you do water try get the water into the pot directly

An other possibility if watered regularly is those leaves almost look fungal infected some times caused by watering wetting the leafs not the roots,

fix by snipping brown and yellow spotted leafs and raking ground of leaves to try remove fungal source.

Try a little liquid fertiliser see if they perk up.

Hello balaji27,

Your plant needs a good feed, just as the previous responder said. This is typical of a Nitrogen deficiency; the plant is clever and moves it from the old leaves to the new which is why they are yellow on the bottom and green at the top. But use a balanced feed, specific for fruiting. Anything too strong can cause the flowers to drop. Best of luck xx

It's great to see you've received some helpful replies @balaji27.

I'd agree that if you haven't applied a fertiliser to the plant, that would be a good idea. Also, you'll find that tomatoes naturally have their lower leaves die off as the plant grows.

You'll find that the pot you are growing this particular plant in is not really quite large enough and certainly not as good as growing in a bed, like your other plants. Although it's possible to grow a tomato in a small pot and have it produce fruit, it can't spread its roots and look for the nutrients it needs. Perhaps you might like to transfer it to a bed is you have enough room.

I need your advice, please have a look at the pics of my tomatoes - these are like this for a long time, not showing any signs of ripening, slow growth and also looks pale to me. Hi @balaji27,

Typically, fully grown tomatoes that don't fully ripen are caused by insufficient sunlight, too much nitrogen (so over-fertilisation), or the temperatures are too cool. Let's rule out temperature, as one would think you are experiencing adequate temps in the middle of Summer. So, could you have over-fertilised or has the area received less sunlight due to the sun's arc in mid-summer?

Yes, I follow the instructions provided in the pack. Moreover, I harvested tomatoes which are started almost same time or just before and they were ripen. If the soil is over-fertilized, then I shouldn't be able to harvest other tomatoes as well, am I right??

Are they receiving the same hours of sunlight as they were earlier in the season? Are they being overshadowed now, and weren't earlier on?

How many tomatoes are on this plant? If there are many, the plant might have difficulties ripening them all at the same time.

Thanks @MitchellMc . Yes I reckon they have been getting enough sunlight, not really overshadowed. There are about 10-12 different size tomatoes at the moment. I will wait for it to ripen. Thanks Balaji.
