How do I cut posts to receive 180x180 stirrups?
Hello @mikey3
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about stirrups.
Are you referring to the VUEPRO 180 x 180mm Galvanised T-Blade Post Support? If you are, you'll need to cut a slot into the base of timber post. You can use a circular saw to do a starting cut on the bottom and surface of the post. The interior part will need to be cleaned out with timber chisels.
Let me call on our experienced members @JoeAzza and @TedBear for their recommendations.
Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your project.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
When cutting the post to length using the circular saw, a plastic rafter square will act as a very safe guide for make those cuts straight.
Any brand for about $12-$15
Hi @mikey3, just to add to @EricL @and@Nailbag information, I found these installation guide online
https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/building-construction/fences-gates/how-to-install-vuepro-system-on-your-timber-support-system-for-a-clean-and-stylish-finishhttps://vuetrade.com/resources/installation-guides/how-to-install-a-t-blade-post-support/The information is not clear on how to actually cut the slot into the timber.
As suggested by @EricL , I would use a power saw, I would just drill a hole at the depth/end of the slot, I wouldn’t cut all the way down to the finished depth, cut to only up to 3/4 depth of the slot, then finish cutting the slot by using a hand saw, I think it would be much safer this way.
agree with Joe. These diagrams may assist in understanding
