Help needed, how do I attach the Ametalin 1350mm x 6.67m Thermal Liner to my tin roof or back or garage roller door? Thanks
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @bluesue. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing Ametalin thermal liner.Typically, this product is installed onto timberwork with Ametalin 25mm x 22mm Cap Nails. Attaching it to the roof of a shed or roller door would prove difficult. Perhaps for the shed roof, you might consider a sheeted product similar to Foilboard that can be adhered to the roof with silicone. For the roller door, a specifically designed product, like GI Building Sciences 10mm 0.5 x 24m 12m² Reflecta Garage Door Insulation, would be the most appropriate option. Both of these products would not only be easier to install but also provide a far greater insulating value. Please let me know if you have any questions.Mitchell
A note for our New Zealand members: The use of foil insulation products is prohibited.
Thanks Mitchell I will check out those products in Bunnings tomorrow 😊
Hi Mitchell I have been reading the reviews on the product the GI building sciences product and they are talking about using on a panel door would this still be easily attached to a colour bond roller door?
I'm so sorry @bluesue. I missed the fact that it was a roller, not a panel door. Their Garage door insulation is 10mm thick, and they have concerns that it could get damaged with a roller door, so I am unaware of any insulation designed for roller doors. There is a chance that you could use GI Building Sciences 10mm 1.5 x 20m 30m² Reflecta Guard Plus as that is a thinner product. You'd still need to check the space between the rolled layers to ensure any product within them doesn't get damaged.
Mitchell
Hi @MitchellMc that is totally ok and I’ve omitted the fact that the roller door will not be in use as it’s being used as an extra room in the house. So anything that can be adhered to the roller door would be fine 😊 and how would I attach it? Thanks
That's great to hear @bluesue. In that case, I'd recommend going with the thicker and better-insulated option of the GI Building Sciences 10mm 0.5 x 24m 12m² Reflecta Garage Door Insulation. I'll point out that the kit is 12m2, so you'd likely need two kits for a double-width roller door.
Here's the installation guide. The product is attached with silicone caulking.
Thanks @MitchellMc for the fast reply. I will definitely try this product out and let you know how I go with it. Thanks again
If it is any help, I used the Ametalin tape to attach and joint their MD silver wrap to steel shed structural members. The adhesive has held for over a year and through this recent heatwave as well.
Great feedback, @mikepilling2! I trust @bluesue appreciates it.
Thanks @mikepilling2
Hi @MitchellMc I finally received my reflecta GDI V2 insulation will let you know how it goes putting it on the roller door and how well it works. Thanks for your advice
That's great to hear @bluesue. Keep us updated on the installation, and reach out if you have any questions.
Hi @MitchellMc which silicone product would I use to attach the insulation to the garage roller door?
Someone also suggested maybe Sikaflex may work? Your thoughts. Thanks
Sue
Hi @bluesue,
Gutter silicone is the preferred product for applications like this. However, given that it's a moving part, and they've specified an industrial silicone, it might be best to upgrade to engineering-grade silicone. You could likely use Sikaflex 11FC, and it would probably work, but I haven't had that recommended specifically.
Thanks @MitchellMc i won’t be using the roller door at all. Does this make a difference?
thanks Sue
The standard gutter silicone will be fine then @bluesue.
Thank you. I’m in the store now 👍🏼
Hi @MitchellMc when attaching the insulation to the non working garage roller door with the silicone what would you suggest to hold the insulation in place until the silicone has dried, the ametalin tape or the ametalin double sided tape. Thanks
Hello @bluesue
I suggest using the Ametalin 38mm x 50m Double Sided Insulation Fixing Tape. This will hold the insulation in place until the silicone cures.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
Thank you @EricL 😊
Hi @bluesue
Please don't forget to post a photo update once the insulation is in place. I'm sure our members will be keen to see what it looks like when fully installed.
Hi does it matter if I have the white side of the reflecta insulation facing out into the room? Thanks
The installation instructions call for the silver side to face out into the room. Given that they've specified this, I would suggest that it is required. Often, sarking-type insulation has a specified orientation in which it performs best.
If you want to improve the appearance, you could then cover the back of the garage door with white melamine-coated MDF sheeting.
Using everything that was recommended in this how to group, thanks guys
Congratulations on your successful installation. You should be very proud of what you've accomplished.
It is always great to see advice turn into a finished project.
If you have any future projects, keep us in mind, we'd love to see what you come up with and offer any advice where needed.

Love your work, @bluesue! Well done.
@mikepilling2 can you tell me more about this? I was going to use foilboard to insulate my shed roof but now your comment has me thinking I can use thermaliner and just cut and tape down? Is that what you did?
Hi @Char1991,
@mikepilling2's installation technique could work for your roof, but the forces of gravity would be of more concern on an inverted surface rather than the vertical one discussed here.
You can adhere the Foilboard to your roof with clear gutter silicone. When installed correctly with the required airgap, Foilboard has a higher insulation value than an insulation liner.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks 😊 it’s worked out great
Thanks for all your help it’s worked out great 😊
