Can I just turn it anti clockwise to remove the valve to enable me to replace the seal?

You are correct the base of the flushing valve must be turned anti-clockwise. However, I recommend being careful as the unit seems to be a few years old. It's possible that the plastic has turned brittle, please take care not to use too much force when turning the plastic valve.
