Can my hedges be saved?

Hello team,

We brought a home over a year ago and our front hedges in front of the main bedroom do not bloom. The retic needs to be fixed as it was broken when we moved in. We have the same hedges on the side of our home that are just beautiful as per the picture. Can these be saved? If so, any assistances is greatly appreciated. I do not garden but now am interested in saving these.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your hedges.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but those hedges are too far gone to be revived. There could be a number of reasons why your hedge died off. Can you please tell me, how often do you water your hedge? Have you been spraying any sort of insecticide or herbicide in that area? Have you noticed any insect infestation?

I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to diagnose a sick plant by @Noelle. At this point in time, it's important to gather information about what could have caused your hedge to die.

At the moment all I can suggest is to keep watering your hedge and observing if any symptoms appear on them.

Sorry, @faithskipper , but I have to agree with Eric! Most of this hedge is dead, and I'd guess most likely because the watering system isn't working and giving them a thorough drink at least once a week over summer has slipped your mind.

Before replanting, repair the reticulation system and then remember to flush it through at least once every six months to remove any build-up of 'gunk' or rubbish in the main lines and drippers or mini sprayers.

@EricL & @Noelle , thank you so much. I wanted to see if I could save them before pulling them out. Will definitely fix or get new retic system put it. Do you have any suggestions on what would be best to plant at the front and side? Looking at something similar due to parcels that get left at our front door but open to other suggestions.

Hi @faithskipper,

I'm sorry to hear that your hedges aren't going to be salvageable.

I believe the living plant in your second image is a viburnum, so you might like to remove the dead stuff and replace it with new viburnums.

Some other options that make good hedges are lilly-pillies, murrayas and photinias.
