Wooden gates upcycled into garden trellis

Recycled hardwood used as slats on treated Pine lengths to make a garden trellis.

The project

I was gifted some old hardwood timber and I needed some trellis, so I consulted the brains trust of the family, namely my 83-year-old dad. He and I built these trellis garden pot holders, three in total, and we're impressed with the result.

Steps

Step 1

Involve the brains trust. This is the planning process.

Step 2

Cut the timber to length. We also go Bunnings to cut the H3 Pine to length. Thank you Bunnings.

Step 3

Painting the timbers before assembling is an easier option.

Step 4

Drill countersink holes, then screw.

Step 5

Finished.

70 x 35 H3 treated Pine 3m lengths
British Paints exterior low sheen in Rainforest colour
Zenith treated Pine screws 8 - 10 x 50mm.

Let me tag @Grub80 to make them aware of your query. Looking at the flowers, I'm guessing it might be an Aloha White Mandevilla. it's a popular climbing vine known for its glossy green leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers. The white blooms in the image are characteristic of this species, though Mandevillas can also come in shades of pink, red, and yellow. They thrive in warm, sunny conditions and are commonly used to add a tropical feel to gardens, patios, and balconies.

Hi @EricL and @erikc. The plant is a mandevilla and a year on has filled the trellis, the plant is beautiful and covers the space of the fence behind, I love the fact that the trellises are moveable, I also have hung baskets of potted colour on them and a stag horn on another trellis that we made.

Hi @MitchellMc @here’s some updated pictures one year on and of an extremely dry year in SA. The trellises are great and the plants too, just finished flowering this year. A light prune and tidy up needed and when it rains some fertiliser and top up of some potting soil
