As we are renovating our home on a pretty strict budget, replacing our bedroom furniture was out of the question so instead, we have put some life back into it by stripping back the dark stain and using a clear matte polyurethane to the areas we kept raw and painting the rest in black (Trendy). Adding the leather handles has modernised these pieces nicely.
Steps
Step 1
Here is what the furniture looked like before we upcycled it.

Excuse the very messy bedroom, but this is what the bed looked like prior to the upcycle
Step 2
Firstly, we sanded back the areas we wanted to keep raw using a multitool sander and an orbital sander. We then painted an undercoat (used Taubmans 3 in 1 prep) on the areas we painted. I forgot to take pics with the undercoat.

Step 3
Starting to take shape, we have worked on the areas we wanted painted and then finished the raw timber off with a clear matte Cabots polyurethane.
painted but not yet clear coated
finished, just need to make it pop with the new handles
Step 4
All finished and revamped! Very happy with this very quick and cost effective upcycle. Adding the leather handles has modernised these pieces very nicely.

Step 5
Putting our room back together. Funky Fresh!! We have also painted our bedroom wall in a stunning green called Pond Moss.
