How to build a gravel-base outdoor entertainment area?

Hello

i have an area approx 3x7m with a clay base. I am looking at gravelling the area for an entertainment area. Is it recommended to have road base compacted under the gravel and the gravel about 12cm deep?

any assistance would be appreciated

Given that you have a clay base, it’s essential to consider the drainage properties and stability of the area. Start by compacting the clay base as much as possible to provide a solid foundation and minimise future movement. Once the clay is compacted, it's important to add a layer of road base for improved drainage. A compacted road base layer of about 50-80mm will help prevent water pooling and maintain the stability of your gravel. On top of the road base, add your gravel layer, with a depth of at least 50mm and up to 100mm. 

The road base serves two purposes: it ensures a flat, stable surface for the gravel and allows water to move through, preventing pooling and potential shifting of the gravel.
