How do I repair this damp-damaged exterior pillar?

After I raised the level of soil against this pillar, over time the plaster was damaged by the damp.

In future I will keep the soil away from touching the wall, which should prevent it happening again, but what do I need to do to repair the existing damage?

As you can see from the photo, some of the plaster has completely dissolved.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @max5. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a pillar.

You'll need to start by removing the damaged render and paint from the bricks. This can be done with a brick bolster and club hammer. Anything that is powdery or not attached well needs to be removed. 

Once you are back to a brick surface, you can apply Dunlop 20kg Multipurpose Acrylic Render to it. Here's a helpful guide: How to render.

After the render has dried, you'll need to prime it and coat it with an exterior weather-resistant paint.
