A wish to create an affordable faux fireplace entertainment unit was realised through upcycling a $20 dated, varnished pine fish tank stand bought from an op shop. All that were needed were time, elbow grease, affordable materials from Bunnings, leftover paint, and a willing hubby!
Steps
Step 1

Remove the hinged doors.
Sand down all surfaces, then wipe them clean
Step 2

Using MDF and pine boards, build:
1. The fireplace alcove
2. Slim doors for storage spaces flanking the alcove
3. An open box between the base cabinet and the original fish tank cover/lid. This section will house some audio equipment. The original fish tank cover/lid simply sits over the box
4. A drop-down hinged door for the front of #4

Step 3
Glue on trims
to the 3 new doors

Step 4
Apply white brick textured wallpaper to the fireplace alcove. Then stick on self-adhesive marble look vinyl tiles to the base of the alcove.
