Attaching Colorbond fence extension

I am attempting to extend the height of my colourbond fence and have purchased the extension posts, the extension panels and the capping post with the advise of my local Bunnings people. Now that I have everything I need I can’t work out how the panels fit into the posts as they are a lot narrower than the gap in the posts. Is there a tutorial for this? I have looked but can’t find one. I’m thinking that I may have been given wrong information on what I need when I purchased the items. These are the items I was advised I needed.

Thank you for your reply. I have attached photos of the existing post and the extension post. I can see that the extension fits into the existing post but my problem is how does the panel fit into the extension post as there is only a 25mm wide lip at the bottom with no lip on the side and the opening in the extension is 5mm.

@hbye I've had a look at these for you online and you were given everything you need. I know it looks a bit odd, however the extension just sits inside the larger brackets and the screws you fix into the top rail/capping of the fence secures it. When I first saw your post, I assumed you may have been given the wrong bracket and capping, as I would have thought it would have had a much thinner channel.

I've had a look at several pictures of this brand on google and checked the specs on the Bunnings web page, they confirm what I am saying.
I can't find a Bunnings video, though this is an extremely similar product which shows the installation procedure. Even though it is a different brand, they still utilise the wide brackets and a thin pressed piece of lattice.

The panels featured above are available in-store and there is a range of coloured lattice fencing extensions to choose from. A slatted variety can also be special ordered from our supplier Fielders.

You will require a capping rail, two post extensions and coloured metal screws to complete the install.

Hi @damien-22,

The panels come in full pieces 815mm, 1575mm, 2350mm or 3100mm. You can cut them down with an angle grinder with some care. You will also need to cut the top rail down to size.

Oh gosh - i just bought 5, had a handyman install otop of masonry - and NOW i see i wasnt even told regarding the brackets, posts or anything atall!!!!! Jumped on here to find HOW do we attach them panels together!!!!!! He’s already screwed them int the masonary- overlapping slightly - was hoping for just a glue :-0 is it too late ? Can we just install a head and tail bracket?? On an 11 foot long extension piece????

These Colorbond extensions and the frame kit associated with them are designed for Colorbond fences. It sounds like you have a masonry wall and have had them attached to it. You could potentially install the capping piece on your extensions but would find it difficult installing the extension posts onto a masonry wall. Without the extension posts installed I think you'll find the panels might not have the rigidity to support the capping piece. As mentioned this is a kit designed for Colourbond fences.

You might like to post some pictures of the current installation as it would assist our members in providing feedback on the options available to you.

Hello,

My neighbours existing colourbond fence is shockingly lower than the standard 1.8m height and is of different height from one end to the other with the lowest part just up to my chest resulting in less privacy.

Wondering if I can do fence extension using the same colourbond panel and post as the existing fence in lieu of lattice fence extensions?

I believe you have found @ProjectPete's step-by-step article on How to add an extension to a Colorbond fence. Within the article Pete uses 300mm Colorbond sheets instead of the lattice seen here.

I have seen above and have been into bunnings. On the videos above and photo there is a gal post extension which slide down giving the strenght in the join but cannot see them in bunnings they just have the post extension which does not match instructions and would appear to be a weak joint? Are the gal extension brackets still available.

Was it these updated Colorbond extension posts that you had seen in-store? If so, they slip over the existing posts and are screwed into place. I can't imagine they would be any less secure than the one pictured above, as they are a solid piece of metal versus the joined gal bracket version.

If you were after the gal bracket version, you might like to speak with a helpful team member at your local store's Special Orders desk. They'll be able to check with suppliers in your area to see what is available.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Baron. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Colorbond fence extensions.

@ProjectPete uses plate 250mm brackets (flat steel hammered into the top of the posts) to connect the 300mm uprights (shape of the channel/post) onto the existing posts.

Using COLORBOND Steel 340mm Fencing Post Extensions is another approach. They are available in our stores and don't require the use of a joining bracket. They fit over the existing posts and are then screwed into position. You'll just need to check whether they are compatible with your fence posts.

I'll also reach out to Pete to see where he got the extensions and plate brackets for his How-To article. I'll let you know when I have an answer.

Hi @Baron,

@ProjectPete has used extensions from the manufacturer of his particular Colorbond fence. Since several profiles of posts exist, you'd need to contact the supplier of your specific fence and order the extension kit through them. The kits are not interchangeable between different brands. Do you happen to know the brand of fence you have? Perhaps Pete might then be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Mitchell Thanks for the info, but I solved it by using 30x30x1.15 galvanized angle from Bunnings cut into 300mm sections and inserted 2 of them halfway into the top of the posts and then attached 340mm long posts ( cut from 2400 posts) added top and bottom rail and used 3 infill sheets cut to 330mm from 1490sheets .I wanted full privacy so I did not want slats or lattice infill. Looks good and very solid. Regards Peter

Hi Eric

Here are some photos of my fence extension. It takes a bit of manipulation to get the 2 - 3 x3 x 1.15mm angles into the top of the posts. I have cut the post extensions using an angle grinder from the standard 2.4 m posts. I made them 340mm long and and cut standard infill sheets to 330mm, that left me very little waste. Of course you can make the extension posts and sheets to suit your requirement or leave out the bottom rail if you want a slat or lattice infill sheet. I made a total of 6 extensions for a total cost of $350, all materials bought from Bunnings.

I did 6 IMG_20211130_093432 (1).jpg extensions for a total cost of $350.

Thank you so much for posting those fencing extension photos. What an amazingly creative solution to extending your fence using Australian Handyman Supplies 30 x 30 x 1.15mm x 2.4m Galvanised Pressed, Angle. I wouldn't have it thought possible because of the shape of the post. This is a good alternative to extending Colorbond steel fences.

Again, thank you for sharing your fence extension technique.
