How to insulate a tongue & groove ceiling?

Hi everyone,

We are living in a small unit which has a ceiling made of tounge-and-groove board. I don't know the materials. It's around 20mm in thickness. I'm looking into insulating the ceiling. Is it worth it? How would we do it? Do we just put ceiling insulation batt on top of the ceiling or is there another way we can do this?

Hi @wellz,

The correct place for the insulation would be between the beams under the tongue-and-groove boards. You'd then plaster over the insulation by attaching it to the beams. Obviously, the ceiling sheeting has been previously removed, perhaps for aesthetic or height-restriction reasons.

If you don't intend to use the roof space, I can't see any reason why you couldn't lay insulation batts across the top of the T&G boards. You'd need to ensure the whole space is covered. I see you already have an insulating blanket on the underside of the roof. This would provide some insulation, but if you are still experiencing unpleasant temperatures, then additional insulation should help. There's also a possibility of insulating on top of the existing blanket, which would prevent the roof space from being unusable due to insulation on the floor.
