How to remove shower drain grate/cover in 1970s era house?

Good day helpful folks!

Does anyone know how to remove this type of drain cover?

I've tried using screwdrivers to lift it and turn it but it doesn't budge.

I want to open it so I can use a drain auger from this end of the drain.

I already used the drain auger from the outdoor end. This helped quite a lot but the drain is still not flowing fast enough.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @perthian. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a drain cover.

Just about every drain cover I've ever come across turns anti-clockwise to release. Some are just a quarter turn, and others unscrew entirely. I suspect that yours is rather stuck due to the corrosion. I'd start by applying some WD-40 around the perimeter. After a couple of hours, you could try a grinder spanner, in which you'd place the lugs into a couple of holes. This will give you a bit of a handle to turn. Some light taps on the handle with a hammer could break the cover free.

There is a chance that the cover is grouted into place, though I think that's unlikely.

If you are unable to remove the cover, you might want to try some chemical cleaners such as Drain Clean 2L Hair Unclogger.
