Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about a laundry benchtop.

The SpecRite 2200 x 600 x 26mm Beech Laminated Panel can be used in the laundry. Yes, you are correct it must be sealed properly, and this includes the sides of the cutout for the laundry sink. I propose using Cabot's 1L Satin Clear Benchtop Timber Finish, it is highly durable, heat* and stain-resistant, a fast-drying varnish that is safe for use on living area and kitchen timber benchtops when the surface is fully cured. Once fully cured, it is resistant to chemicals, oils and heat from hot cups/mugs.

Because the Beech laminated panel is a natural product any type of sealer placed on its surface will have an effect. Just as when unsealed timber gets wet, when the surface of the Beech panel is painted there will be a reaction. But because you are using a water-based sealer it will not yellow. I propose testing it on a small portion at the bottom of the benchtop and if you are satisfied with the finish, you can then commit the entire benchtop.

My best advice is to paint the benchtop in a safe and secure area where no one will touch it, it can't get wet or be exposed to dusty environments.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a paint rated mask when working on your project.

I used a Heava Benchtop a few years back for my laundry benchtop Laundry retrofit (is the project) I only oiled the benchtop, I gave it three coats and must admit I havnt applied oil to it since. The water still beads if I let it sit on it and no perishing has happened. I didnt want a laquer or painted top and I like the natural feel and scent (at first) of the oiled timber look.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. I've ordered the Kaboodle cupboards which are 4-6 weeks away and then I'll grab the timber to complete the project.

I also stumbled across the Practa 2200 x 600 x 25mm Rubberwood Timber Benchtop. Does anyone know if this would also be suitable for use in the laundry with a trough installed.

Yes, the Practa 2200 x 600 x 25mm Rubberwood Timber Benchtop can be used in the laundry as well. Please note that the entire benchtop must be sealed including the cut made for the laundry sink.
