Can you lay new mulch over old?

Preparing the house for sale and I'd like to neaten up the front yard with a layer of new mulch. The existing stuff is pretty thin in places. Yard is approx 8x 9m and I have a couple of questions.

Can I just lay new mulch over this old stuff, or do I need to remove that 1st?

and...how much would I need?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @stevo69. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about mulching an area.

You're right to go straight over the top of what's there, there is no need to remove the old. It doesn't look like you have many weeds popping through, so you won't have to control those. That's just clippings on the mulch, isn't it?

A 50mm layer of mulch is plenty to cover; you might even get away with 25mm. So, if my calculations are correct, you should need around 45 bags of Richgro 40L Hard Wood Mulch to cover the area to a depth of 25mm.

Depending on your location, we offer a range of delivered bulk mulch mixes. If you were going to go this route, you'd need around 1.8 m³, which will be two 1m³ loads. 

Remember to pick yourself up a decent rake like the Cyclone Super Garden Rake to help spread the mulch.
