How to lay artificial grass

Hi Bunnings Workshop community, 

I'm hoping to lay artificial grass within the blue section, but have never done this before.

Do I need to add a membrane underneath first? Which artificial grass would you recommend for a courtyard like this? 

What tools would I need to cut to the shape as shown in blue? 

Will there be an issue in simply cutting a hole out of the grass where the drain is (red circle)?

Finally, are there perhaps other routes anyone would recommend I go down other than artificial grass? My hope is to make it a more friendly area for my little kiddos, so they'd be happy to walk outside and sit/play there - the concrete/slate there currently gets dirty easily and is not exactly inviting.  Will also be getting outdoor furniture at a later point.

Laying artificial grass in your courtyard is a fantastic idea to create a kid-friendly and inviting space. However, you need to note that artificial grass isn’t designed to cover hard surfaces like stamped concrete or pavers. As you can't use ground pins, you might need to consider glueing it down if it moves around too much.

When it comes to cutting the grass to fit your space, a sharp utility knife or carpet cutter will be essential.
