How to resurface kitchen benchtops?

I'm planning on resurfacing my kitchen countertops soon.

I'm unsure of how I plan to resurface, any information is welcome, I was planning to just sand it down and paint it.

But I've noticed my current counters have this sheet-like overlay on currently. I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify? Should I attempt to pull up just this thing later? 

The underside shows a MDF base.

Any insights, recommendations or advice is welcome and appreciated!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @GiaLeigh. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about re-surfacing a benchtop.

That appears to be a laminate/Formica sheet, so you could prepare it as per the instructions for the Dulux Renovation range of benchtop paints. You'll then use their primer and clearcoat. The Renovation range is not suitable for timber, so if you intend on painting the edging, the gloss should be sanded back, and then Dulux Precision primer can be be used before your topcoat of Aquanamel.

When working on older homes, it's important to be aware that asbestos may be present in certain materials, including Formica benchtops. In homes built before the mid-1980s, asbestos was sometimes used in the backing of Formica or other laminate surfaces. If disturbed during renovation or removal, asbestos fibres can become airborne, posing serious health risks such as asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma.

Before proceeding with any demolition or sanding of old Formica benchtops, it’s recommended to have the material professionally tested for asbestos. If asbestos is found, hire a licensed asbestos removal professional to safely handle and dispose of it.
